Central Florida Teen Arrested In Suspected eBay Scheme

Posted: 9:49 am EST November 3, 2006Updated: 7:16 pm EST November 5, 2006

Agents said a 19-year-old used eBay to set up a major scam that brought in nearly a million dollars. State authorities said Thomas Thompson was selling expensive computer equipment that he didn't have.

Thompson did most of the work out of his parent's home and one of his alleged victims is a major company. At one point, the teen also operated out of a downtown office building.

Agents said they expect to find that Thompson committed more than $1 million in fraud.

Thompson was bounced out of bed by Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents Friday morning. His parents wouldn't talk about the bust, but were shocked according to investigators.

Seized computers, agents believe, will help make their case. They are the very machines Thompson allegedly used to convince small businesses to spend thousands of dollars on eBay, a website that lets users auction off merchandise.

"This was some high-end computer networking equipment that typically goes for $16,000-$20,000 and he was selling it for steeply below that price," said Susie Murphy, Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Victims thought they were getting a great deal, until the box arrived in the mail filled with nothing but newspaper. In one case, Thompson actually purchased some equipment himself, but wrote a bad $500,000 check to Verizon.

Agents know of more than $800,000 worth of bogus transactions, but they said recovering the money is not likely. They said Thompson bought himself a Mercedes with the money, along with lots of expensive stuff. They expected to find assault rifles in his home, because they knew he bought two. But he, apparently, pawned them because he ran out of money

Thompson was charged with six counts of grand theft and other fraud charges, in spite of the fact that agents said he tried to blame it all on his friends.
