Crooks Steal Money For Christmas Toys From Elks Lodge

Posted: 12:57 pm EST November 6, 2006Updated: 1:27 pm EST November 6, 2006

Members of a Volusia County Elks Lodge said a crook didn't steal from them, but from needy children.

Sunday, a lodge trustee noticed the key pad was missing from the alarm system at the Elks Lodge on Wilmette Avenue in Ormond Beach. A safe in an office was ransacked and a poker machine damaged.

Lodge member John McCarthy told Eyewitness News the money was supposed help buy toys for children this Christmas.

"It's really a shame for all the member that have done the work to raise money for Christmas and stuff will be gone," he said.

McCarthy said it appears the burglar was only after cash, since thousands of dollars worth of liquor was never touched.

Ormond Beach police were investigating.
