SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. -- Customers paid for a maid service, but they ended up being cleaned out. A former employee of the Royal Maid Service and her husband are accused of stealing from her client's homes.Seminole County deputies said more than 100 pieces of jewelry ended up at a pawn shop.Royal Maid Service didn't return Eyewitness News' calls. Even the sheriff's office doesn't know how many homes the accused woman had access to.Eyewitness News talked to one victim who said the maid left a mess. Instead of dusting furniture, victims said, Arlene Pedragon did some dirty deeds."She just went through and picked what she wanted and she picked very choice pieces, very particular what she took," said victim Kellie Bebber.
Bebber thought she was safe when she hired the Royal Maid Service to clean, but soon she noticed she'd been cleaned out."I noticed one thing was missing. Then it turned into a list of like 10 items," she said. When deputies checked pawn records, they found Pedragon and her husband, Eric Hachmeister, pawned away more than 100 items in just the last few months. The sheriff's office said it doesn't even know how many homes she cleaned or stole from."It's frightening to know that somebody you trust, that has access to the house, you hire them to do a job, they come in and can rob you blind," Bebber said. But the problem didn't end there. When Bebber went to EZ Pawn to get her things back, it wasn't so easy."They said, 'Well, you'll have to buy it back from us. It's actually gonna be $95 for the four items,'" Bebber explained.Eyewitness News tried to find out why, but EZ Pawn wouldn't comment. Eyewitness News found the law allows pawnbrokers to keep the goods and, if convicted, Pedragon will have to pay victims like Bebber back. But, she said, next time she'll do the cleaning herself."I will be very careful and I probably won't ever hire a maid in the future," she said.Pedragon told deputies she stole to feed to her drug problem.Eyewitness News didn't hear back from Royal Maids. The sheriff's office said the company is cooperating and actually fired the maid a week before her arrest.
