SANFORD, Fla. -- It was an unexpected, early morning swim, Wednesday, when the driver of a Jeep ended up in the pool at a Sanford apartment complex. The driver was okay, but the vehicle is total loss.
SLIDESHOW: SUV Ends Up At Bottom Of Pool
The accident left behind a lot of damage, and not just to the car. The only explanation the man in the Jeep could come up with was that the accelerator got stuck, causing the SUV to travel from the parking lot to the pool."I think there's a lot of cleanup I still got to do," said maintenance man Bobby Brinson.
Brinson will stay busy for a while at the Tropicana Apartments on 24th Street in Sanford. He said the water in the swimming pool will have to be drained and a black fence repaired after the SUV knocked it over and ended up at the bottom of the pool."Then I said, 'Well, how did this happen?' Nobody knows English," Brinson said.Shortly after midnight, Spanish-speaking Jose Lopez and the jeep's owner were in the parking lot of the Tropicana Apartments trying to jump-start the Jeep. Lopez said, all of a sudden, the SUV peeled out in reverse, clipped a tool shed, drove through a fence and into the pool, all while Lopez was behind the wheel.Desperate to get out, Lopez said he tried to open the door. When that failed, he tried to break the window. As the clock ticked, he thought for sure he was going to die, but the owner of the Jeep and a neighbor jumped in and got him out safely."It's fortunate that someone was around to see him go in the pool, otherwise it could have been worse," said Sgt. Raymond Irvin, Sanford Police Department.Lopez did not require medical attention.
