ORLANDO, Fla. -- When police in Orlando searched astronaut Lisa Nowak's car, they found a handwritten map to the victim Collen Shipman's townhome in Cape Canaveral. That sparked a whole new scare.
VIDEO: Victim Files For Restraining Order
Shipman was so worried that Nowak came to her townhome before she went to the airport that she called her roommate here to make sure Nowak didn't come there first and harm her.Shipman's roommate was fine. Shipman, though, has been thrust into the national spotlight and there are big questions looming over Nowak's future.Nowak may be able to go into orbit and to the International Space Station, but she won't be able to come anywhere near the townhome in Cape Canaveral where Shipman lives. Shortly after the attack, Shipman filed for a restraining order against the astronaut. In the document, Shipman described the attack in the Orlando International Airport parking lot, describing how a woman in a wig and trench coat beat on the window of her car, writing, "I started the car and told her that I would send someone to help her. She said she couldn't hear me. I opened the window about two inches and she sprayed me with mace or pepper spray. I threw the car in gear and drove to the parking office where we called the police."Police later found Nowak trying to throw away her disguise. The petition says Nowak is unstable and feels like a scorned woman. Also in the petition, Shipman said she knew Nowak as an acquaintance of her boyfriend, but she did not say if that boyfriend was Astronaut Bill Oefelein. When asked how long the conduct has been going on, she said the attack was one day, but indicated she was being stalked for approximately two months. Shipman says Nowak researched her personal information, including the flight at OIA, using government contacts or computer. There was no indication how Nowak and Shipman met at this point. Shipman works with the launch support at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. People in her squadron typically have limited contact with astronauts, especially since most of the astronauts train and live in Houston.Eyewitness News placed a request with the Air Force to speak with Shipman, but did not receive a reply, Tuesday.
