Couple Blames Valet Company For Car Damages At Magic Game

POSTED: 5:44 pm EST February 28, 2007
UPDATED: 6:05 pm EST February 28, 2007

A Clermont couple is frustrated by a $4,000 repair bill after a parking attendant damaged their Corvette during an Orlando Magic basketball game. The car owners said the valet company promised to pay up, but they have not received a dime yet.

"We're looking at having to replace the whole front here," Cal Moore said.

Moore said he now thinks it was a mistake to valet park his wife's custom Corvette at a Magic game last month. It's a car that's even been featured in "Vette" magazine.

"The driver attendant apologized repeatedly for damaging our vehicle and admitted the responsibility," Moore said.

After the game, Moore was told the bottom front spoiler was ripped off the car. A manager from the valet service, called 717 Parking, said they'd pay, but that didn't last long.

"Their contention then became that it was the city's fault," Moore said. "Their claim then became that that tire device that will rip your tires if you go the wrong way wasn't locked down enough and that was what damaged the vehicle."

The tire wrecking device can clearly damage low riding cars, so the parking company decided the city should pay and the city declined.

"We weren't driving the car and we weren't at fault, so we just want them to pony up like they said they'd do," Moore said.

Eyewitness News called 717 Parking and was told a deal had just been reached with the city, the Magic and the valet company now apparently sharing the cost, but only after Moore made noise, learned a lesson and now has some advice.

"People might want to think twice before using the valet parking," Moore said.

The head of the arena complex didn't talk to Eyewitness News on camera Wednesday, but said part of the delay was because lawyers were brought in after the Moore's were unwilling to involve their own insurance company in the matter.
