6 People Injured On Walt Disney World Water Ride

Posted: 2:25 pm EDT May 29, 2007Updated: 6:25 pm EDT May 29, 2007

Six people were taken to a hospital after an accident on a Disney ride. They were hurt on the Kali River Rapids ride at Animal Kingdom on Tuesday morning.

The victims, including one employee, were hurt during an evacuation.

The ride makes a steep climb and then plunges 30 feet into water. For some reason, the raft stopped halfway up the incline around 10:30 Tuesday morning.

Disney used platforms to get guests off the ride and let them walk down, but one of the platforms slid, injuring a mother and father, three teens and a Disney worker.

"They were nervous," said Deputy Chief Bo Jones, Reedy Creek Fire Department.

Jones was one of the first on scene. He said all six people went to the hospital with back pain, neck pain, bumps and bruises.

"There was a family among the victims. They were just concerned about their family members, making sure they were okay," Jones said.

Disney is still not sure why the exit platforms didn't stay in place or what caused the ride to stop on a steep incline. Jones said everyone was lucky they were able to walk away

"It could have been a lot worse. All the guests were very fortunate they had minor injuries," he said.

Eyewitness News wanted to talk with the family about Tuesday morning's accident, but Celebration Hospital didn't allow it. The victims names are not being released.

The Kali River Ride was closed down for most of the day, but reopened early Tuesday evening. Disney said they're removing all of the exit platforms and will use a different evacuation process going forward.
