State troopers got quite a surprise when they investigated a crash in Ocoee. They uncovered a pair of wounded birds that looked like they had been used for cockfighting.

The birds will have to be put to sleep. They were taken to Animal Services. Troopers found the car Sunday night on Cy Road near Clarcona-Ocoee Road, but they did not find the driver.

Troopers said they see a lot of accidents, but this one they probably won't soon forget. When they walked up to the wrecked Ford Mustang, they found no driver, just two wounded birds.

"In the back seat of the vehicle there were two hens," said Carl Hupchick of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The chickens weren't heading for the dinner table. They looked like they were used for illegal cockfighting. They were so badly injured that both birds will have to be put to sleep.

"Their feet were tied. They had wounds. They were known for cockfighting," Hupchick said.

The driver was nowhere to be found. He left the scene before troopers could arrive. Even though the birds looked like they were used for fighting, the Highway Patrol said they can't charge the driver with cockfighting.

"We have nobody to prove it, due to nobody being here when we found the car. They actually have to be caught in the act," Hupchick added.

The driver will face charges for leaving the scene of an accident.
