MELBOURNE, Fla. -- A 14 year old girl underwent surgery Friday night after being shot in the stomach by a 13 year old male friend in Melbourne.

The incident happened around 1030 pm Friday when the boy found a handgun in his Westminster Avenue home that belonged to his mother.

A Melbourne Police spokesperson says the mother has a concealed weapons permit.

While the boy was playing with the gun, it went off and hit the girl who was visiting at the time.

The girl was rushed to the hosptial and after surgery was reported to be in stable condition.

Police have not released the names of the people involved.

The spokesperson says that an investigation is underway to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
