ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Orange County leaders are forging ahead with the idea of installing cameras to put the brakes on red light runners. The county commission plans to bring up the issue again Tuesday. If the county goes on its own, intersections like the one at Orange Blossom Trail and Holden Avenue would be targeted. In one year there were 622 crashes because of red light runners. One commissioner said if the state won't do anything about it, the county should. When Orange County commissioner Linda Stewart first brought up the issue of cameras at busy intersections, she called it a 'no brainer' and some Orange County residents agreed."Our policeman can only do so much, and this red light thing, it's wise of them to do this," said Stewart.State law makers could not get legislation passed, but Apopka seems to be leading the way by passing its own local ordinance and Stewart wants Orange County to follow suit."They only have one intersection with cameras. They are doing it and we should do it here," she said. The issue is expected to come up at Tuesday's commission meeting and, while critics say it won't work because studies have shown half the time warnings get sent to the wrong people, Stewart believes the proof is in the numbers. 5 test cameras caught nearly 11,000 red light runners in one day.Stewart thinks the county can pass something as long as they stay away from state roads. The ticket would work like a parking ticket; the owner of the car would be fined, but it would not affect their driving record. The commission meeting begins Tuesday at 9:00am.
