Cathedral Parishioners Evacuated During Mass

Posted: 12:55 pm EDT July 29, 2007Updated: 1:53 pm EDT July 29, 2007

People attending the 7:30 mass at Orlando's Cathedral of St. James were evacuated Sunday morning just before they were to receive communion.

The cause of the disruption was an unattended briefcase inside the church that prompted the Orlando Police to send in their bomb squad.

Worshipers were kept outside while heavily suited bomb technicians inspected the briefcase and tried to determine if it contained any explosives.

Those who tried to attend the Cathedral's 9am mass were turned away by police.

Finally it was determined the case contained only an artist's oils and brushes, and the church was reopened.

Masses resumed at 10:30.
