A reptile has created a problem in South Florida. Wildlife officials are searching for a 9-foot crocodile that killed a family pet.

A young girl in Coral Gables spotted a dog floating in a river near her home. At first, she thought it was joke but then realized it had been killed by a crocodile.

Wildlife officials said the dog is the first pet killed in the area. Neighbors said they hope it will be the last.

"That's a boxer, that's a large dog. So if a 4- or 5-year-old child could be playing in the garden and the animal can attack him and kill him," said Raul de Cespedes, who saw the crocodile.

State wildlife officials have been trying to catch the crocodile for three weeks.

Unlike alligators, crocodiles are protected and it will not be destroyed.
