Army Suggests Fence Around Old Bombing Range Near School

Friday, August 17, 2007

A fence will be built to keep kids safe from an old bombing range at Odyssey Middle School in Orange County, just in time for school to start on Monday.

The Army Corps of Engineers revealed Thursday night that tests showed the grounds at Odyssey Middle School were free of any hazardous chemicals. A few weeks ago live bombs were found near the school yard which was built on an old World War II bombing range.

Since then engineers have been scouring the land. Surface tests show it's safe, but deeper soil readings were still underway and some parents aren't convinced.

"We don't know to what extent it was done. You'd have to actually witness what was done and what tests were actually performed," said Marsha Heyliger, a concerned parent.

Engineers expect the final analysis from soil samples to be out in the next three to four weeks.
