Pilot Severly Burned In Ormond Beach Plane Crash

Posted: 7:32 pm EDT August 19, 2007Updated: 11:52 pm EDT August 19, 2007

A pilot was badly burned when his plane crashed at the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport in Volusia County Sunday.

The charred remains of the "Liberty XL2" still sat in a field at the airport long after James Hull, 32, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Sixty percent of Hull's body was burned.

"Where he was going and where he was heading, we really don’t know," said Sergeant Kenny Hayes with Ormond Beach Police Department.

Investigators also did not know why the plane had crashed.

The plane Hull was flying was registered to Ormond Beach Aviation, a flight school that works out of the airport. One pilot, who also flew out of that airport, claimed some of the planes owned by the flight school had suffered damage from incidents four or five times in the past, but nothing as severe as Sunday's crash.

"Inexperience of the pilot probably. Depends on how much seat time he has too," said pilot Andy Pysz.

Sunday night, federal investiagtors were on their way to the crash scene to investigate.
