Mt. Dora Residents Upset Over Loud Air Conditioning Unit

Friday, August 24, 2007 – updated: 8:10 am EDT August 24, 2007

Neighbors in one Lake County community may have some bags under their eyes from lack of sleep.

They blame a large air conditioning system at Mt. Dora High School. Neighbors complained that no one has done anything about it in a year. When school started on Monday, the loud whining noise became even worse, running 24 hours a day.

"It just annoys my ears," said Clarence Beall, a neighbor. "It's a whining in my head all the time."

Lake County School District workers said they were looking at ways to get rid of some of the noise. But they're not sure if anything can be done to get rid of the noise without shutting off the air conditioners.

Mt. Dora's noise ordinance calls for less than 75 decibels during the day and less than 70 at night. Channel 9 measured the air conditioner at 79 decibels.
