NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- The family of seasoned surfer Joe Coursey said it took only a second for a shark to bite down on his hand, near the Jetties, south of Ponce Inlet on Sunday."He said it didn't hurt. It happened so quickly. He just looked down and there was a shark on his hand," said Sarah Coursey, the victim's daughter.Sarah Coursey was with her father in the water when he was attacked. She said her father managed to bandage his own hand and flag down help before she knew what happened.Sarah said, like other surfers, she's encountered sharks in the water before."I've seen them, I've been bumped, but I've never seen anyone get bit before," said Sarah Coursey.Volusia County Beach Patrol said that out of 11 shark bites this year, ten have happened within a half mile of the Jetties in New Smyrna."There are a lot of people in the water, plus the murky water from the surf. It makes the perfect environment for it.," said Mike Berard, of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.Joe Coursey had surgery on his hand at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He is expected to be fine.Coursey was the second person to get bitten on his left hand in that same area in two days.
