Woman Considering Lawsuit After Wal-Mart Sandals Hurt Her Feet

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 – updated: 10:16 am EDT September 13, 2007

Wal-Mart officials said they have pulled thousands of sandals off store shelves after seeing a website started by a Marion County woman. She started the site to document problems with her feet caused by the sandals.

They only cost photographer Kerry Stiles $2.44 when she bought them in April for a photo shoot. Afterward, she figured she might as well wear them and now she's worried that decision might have cost her her good health.

"I thought they were perfect," Stiles said.

Then Stiles, of Ocklawaha, wore them for about an hour one day and said the next six weeks weren't so pretty. Her feet were itching and swelling which got worse and worse, turning to blistering and scabbing until she said it was too painful to walk.

"The skin would split apart," Stiles said of her feet.

She complained to the Marion County Wal-Mart where she bought the sandals on July 2, and says the manager wouldn't even look at her feet.

"He turned his head away," she added.

A few days later she got a letter from Wal-Mart telling her the Chinese supplier was responsible and to expect a call from the supplier. The letter also said that if it didn't happen in ten days, she was free to call China herself.

She never heard from the supplier and called a lawyer, instead of China.

Her feet are still red and still tender. Ten days ago, two months after Stiles first complained to Wal-Mart, the chain said it took the sandals off the shelves and stopped selling them. Wal-Mart said they were taking the report very seriously and even though they said they had only gotten a few similar complaints after selling millions of pairs, they are going to have the sandals tested.

But Stiles said she's heard from 140 other people who said the same thing happened to them.

"I just want to know what's in my system," said Stiles.

She's going to have the shoes tested and she's saved skin samples for testing as well and said she is considering a lawsuit.
