UCF: More Water Should Have Been Available At Football Game

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- UCF is admitting it made a big mistake for its first game in its new home; not enough water. Concession stands ran out during Saturday's inaugural game and the stadium wasn't built with any water fountains.Officials said next week's game would be different and that they would triple the amount of water available to fans. They said they never want to see the same situation happen again.

As workers cleaned up after UCF's first game at the new Bright House Networks stadium, officials worked on a way to clean up another problem. Water.More than 45,000 fans sat in 97-degree heat on Saturday and the stadium ran out of water."I think if you're gonna be playing a game in 95-degree heat you need to know that all of your fans are going to want water. And probably want more than one bottle of water," said Danny Hillman.The stadium was built with zero drinking fountains. UCF cancelled them to keep the stadium on budget. The Citrus Bowl has 23 fountains.Making matters worse, security precautions prevent fans from bringing their own water in through the gates. And many had to spend $3 to buy a bottle of water.Fans said that is ridiculous."We did have a water problem at the stadium. There is no doubt about that. We underestimated the need for water," said Al Harms, a UCF spokesperson.The stadium only had enough bottles of water for about half of the fans. Although, towards the end of the game vendors were giving out cups of water as fans were drinking out of the bathroom faucets.At next weekend's game, UCF officials plan to triple the amount of water available. They said they would look into installing drinking fountains, but would make no promises."Of course I would. I wish it wouldn't be hot and sweaty everyday in Florida, too,: said Harms when asked if he thought the school should have put in the fountains when the stadium was being completed.To make amends with fans, UCF officials said they would be handing out bottle of water to each person at the gates when they enter next weeks game, but only next week's game.
