Man With Quran Tasered After Refusing To Put Hands Up

Friday, September 21, 2007 – updated: 1:16 pm EDT September 21, 2007

Ocala police fired a Taser at a man because he refused to put his hands up and put down his Quran. Now the man is claiming his civil rights were violated.

Police asked 49-year-old Jeffrey Shields to show his hands, but he refused, saying he had his Quran in his waistband and didn't want to drop it.

Police said he resisted arrest without violence.

All four officers involved are still on duty, pending the investigation by the Ocala Police Department.
