UCF Student Government Votes Down Proposed Taser Ban

Friday, September 28, 2007 – updated: 2:48 pm EDT September 28, 2007

UCF's student government voted down a proposal that would have asked school police and officials to ban Tasers from campus.

The move came after a University of Florida student was tased at a Senator John Kerry forum last week. Some UCF student leaders who wrote the proposal were outspoken and said they didn't want a similar incident to happen at UCF.

But in the end, more student leaders decided they wanted campus police to continue carrying Tasers.

"To take tasers away, a non lethal weapon, one of the few they have, seems like it would be irresponsible," said Logan Berkowitz, Student Government Association Vice President.

Campus police officers said they did not believe the Tasers would have been banned no matter how the students voted because the Tasers were such a valuable tool for keeping officers and students safe.
