Developer Evacuates Homes In Search For Old Bombs

Posted: 6:57 am EDT October 16, 2007Updated: 12:42 pm EDT October 16, 2007

An Orange County neighborhood was evacuated Tuesday because of a search for bombs. The Vista Lakes subdivision off Lee Vista Road is near Odyssey Middle School.

The subdivision was built close to an old WWII bombing range. Tuesday, the developer was searching the area for live bombs.

According to a letter sent to all the homeowners by Lennar Homes, they were to evacuate between 9:00 Tuesday morning and 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, but the reaction among residents was mixed as some said they didn't want to leave.

The geophysical survey of the yards of each Lennar Home in the Warwick community is complete and the digging for metal objects that might include munitions debris from the former Pine Castle jeep bombing range began Tuesday morning. That means anyone within 480 feet of the digging was asked to leave the area.

"I want to make sure everything is cool. I don't want to be asleep in there one day and things can happen," said Eddie Tantoco, a concerned resident.

According to a Lennar representative, 21 of its properties in the subdivision could be affected. The digging will happen on six lots during the next three days. What is found underneath will determine whether the remaining 15 lots will undergo the same treatment.

Meanwhile, people who bought homes built by Morrison, located on the other side of the retention pond and much closer to the former bombing range, said they feel ignored. They said no one has checked on their land.

"I'm really disappointed, actually, because when they were selling the homes they were quick to sell them and we bought this to be our last home," said Chris Schoenbohm, a homeowner.

According to the builder, two homes will be excavated Tuesday as well as two more Wednesday and two more on Thursday. Additional lots will be excavated pending the results of the first six digs and that could take an additional two weeks.
