ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Expressway Authority mistake has resulted in 4,000 drivers getting a second bill for tolls they thought they had paid. Some of those drivers say they're being threatened with losing their licenses if they don't pay up."I'm flabbergasted. It's absurd. It doesn't make any sense," said Jasper Bowling.Bowling has a few EPass transponders he rotates through several work trucks. Recently, he forgot one and ran some tolls. He paid $85.50 for the mistake. But then, the Expressway Authority sent him a letter telling him it made a mistake and he owed the Clerk of Courts another $73.00."It's not right," Bowling said. "I'm upset about it and I don't want to pay it."Channel nine uncovered 4,000 letters were sent to drivers telling them they need to pay more. It turns out the Expressway Authority didn't realize new legislation allowed the Clerk's office to charge toll violators more money for court costs."The Expressway Authority should not be doing this," said Bowling. "If they made the mistake, they should eat the mistake."The Expressway Authority had little sympathy."We apologize for the inconvenience we caused," said spokeswoman Lindsay Hodges. "We do understand it's a burden. It's unfortunate, but the bottom line is… pay the toll."In addition to the higher court costs, the new law makes late payment of a toll fine late a moving violation. That gives drivers three points on their driver's licenses. Drivers are not issued a citation until they run the tolls more than three times. Points are issued if violators don't pay within 30 days.
