Thieves Target Crest Whitestrips, Toothbrushes In CVS Theft

Friday, October 26, 2007 – updated: 4:25 pm EDT October 26, 2007

Thieves seemed interested in some pretty unusual loot including, of all things, Crest Whitestrips when they stole from a drug store in Altamonte Springs.

Police said the thieves were after nearly $800 worth of Crest Whitestrips and electric toothbrushes. Video clearly captured the getaway, which appeared to be carefully planned out.

Surveillance video captured the suspects walking in the CVS in Altamonte Springs like any other customers, but the camera caught the first sign of trouble when an accomplice pulled a van up in front with the doors already open.

On cue, two men with the shaved heads made a run for it, this time carrying three shopping baskets, and jumped into the waiting van and made their get away. Store managers said the baskets were filled with nothing but pricey electric tooth brushes and Crest Whitestrips.

"The whitening strips are what they were looking for. They wiped the whole shelf clean of them," explained Officer Tim Hyer, Altamonte Springs Police Department.

After the theft, a store manager still holding his price gun could do nothing but stand outside where the van and the suspects were long gone.

"Well, they are high dollar items. They stole the family packs, which are pretty expensive and that's the only thing we can think of, is that they're going to try to sell them at flea markets," Hyer said.

But recovering any of it will be difficult. Police only hope the video, showing the suspects and an older model white Dodge van, will help them track down the people who are responsible for what amounts to a case of grand theft.

"We're talking about almost $800 worth," Hyer said.

Unlike other popular stolen items, like cough medicine, police said Crest Whitestrips don't contain any special ingredients that can be used to make drugs.

Investigators said all three of their suspects are white men in their 20s with tattoos on their forearms.
