VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A multi-agency task force cracked an international drug trafficking ring in west Volusia County. Investigators raided at least six homes in Deltona, DeBary and Lake County believed to be involved in the distribution of cocaine and marijuana coming out of Mexico.
SLIDESHOW: Suspect Mugs, Drugs & Guns Seized In Raids
The major ring, which agents said distributed drugs from Mexico across Central Florida, was broken up Friday in Volusia County. Eight people were arrested early Friday and a ninth suspect turned himself in late Friday afternoon in the nearly year-long investigation.Kilos of cocaine, a dozen pounds of marijuana, bundles of cash and nine guns were taken during investigators' early morning raids of six Central Florida homes."A major drug smuggling operation was put out of business," said Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson.A total of nine suspects were arrested and authorities are still looking for more. They're not even sure yet just how long the ring has been operating."It's too early in the investigation to identify exactly how this group came to know each other and when they began originally. We received information in November of last year," said Jack Bisland, Florida Department of Law Enforcement.Investigators said the drugs were smuggled across the Mexico border into Texas and then couriers drove them to Central Florida where they were distributed. At the DeBary home of the alleged ringleader, dogs sniffed out the drugs and investigators carried boxes of evidence from the house. As much as a kilo of cocaine and 100 pounds of marijuana came out of the home on a weekly basis and investigators said it still likely just puts a dent in the drug trade."The sad part is there will be somebody else ready to step up to the plate and take on a drug smuggling ring, but they better remember we'll be there to meet them when it happens," Johnson said. The drugs didn't just stay in Volusia County. They were distributed in Lake, Orange and even Hillsborough counties.
