Customer Allegedly Tries Robbing Bank After Not Getting $50

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 – updated: 3:12 pm EDT October 31, 2007

A change of heart turned a customer into a crook. Daytona Beach police said he tried to rob a bank, but didn't get far.

The customer first tried to open an account at the SunTrust Bank on Palmetto Avenue in Daytona Beach. When that didn't work, his transaction took a turn for the worst.

Police said the robber was originally after a promotion the bank is running. If you open a savings account, they give you $50. Scott Riley had problems opening an account, so police said he decided he'd take whatever they had.

Riley was at the bank in Daytona Beach on Monday afternoon. What he did landed him in jail and in front of a judge Tuesday afternoon.

"He stated that he wanted to open a savings account because, basically, he wanted the $50 they were offering to open the account," explained Det. Dale Detter, Daytona Beach Police Department.

According to police, Riley didn't have the ID he needed to open an account at the bank and get the free $50, so he left and came back with a note.

"It stated, I want the money, I want all the money in the bank," Detter said.

Riley then took his note and left without any money.

"He figured he'd spent too much time in there," Detter said.

Two hours later, one of the tellers driving home actually spotted him at a gas station. She called police and they held him.

Riley was never armed, except with a note, but he's facing a charge of robbery and resisting arrest.
