Church Agrees To Sell Property For New Performing Arts Center

First United Methodist Church will get $28 million for selling part of its newly renovated building in downtown Orlando to the Orlando Performing Arts Center.

The performing arts center is buying part of the land at South Street and Magnolia Avenue to make room for the proposed downtown venue, but the church will be able to use the money to build parking lots and new buildings that will curve around South Street.

Church members took a vote Tuesday night that will change the future of First United Methodist Church and the shape of downtown. Nearly 400 members decided to give up a newly renovated building for $28 million.

"Buildings come and go, you know, so this will help the church and downtown Orlando. It's just one of the services we provide here," said Pat Schwartz, a church member.

The Orlando Performing Arts Center needed part of the land at South Street and Magnolia Avenue to start construction on its new facility. The newly-renovated church building will be torn down. The old building will stay and the church will build new facilities and parking lots that will curve around South Street.

"It's best for the church and for Orlando. We're thrilled," said Linda Barnes, a church member.

Not everyone was excited. Close to 50 members voted against giving up the newly-renovated building in exchange for a new performing arts center.

"Some of the concerns were perhaps we didn't explore the proposal," added member Carol Conner.

First United Methodist Church has been in downtown Orlando for more than 100 years.

Construction on the new performing arts center will start in just under two years.
