Nearly 400 members decided to give up a newly renovated building for $28 million."Buildings come and go, you know, so this will help the church and downtown Orlando. It's just one of the services we provide here," said Pat Schwartz, a church member. The Orlando Performing Arts Center needed part of the land at South Street and Magnolia Avenue to start construction on its new facility. The newly-renovated church building will be torn down. We're thrilled," said Linda Barnes, a church member. Not everyone was excited. Close to 50 members voted against giving up the newly-renovated building in exchange for a new performing arts center."Some of the concerns were perhaps we didn't explore the proposal," added member Carol Conner.First United Methodist Church has been in downtown Orlando for more than 100 years.Construction on the new performing arts center will start in just under two years.
