ORLANDO, Fla. -- An upscale I-Drive restaurant was so dirty and roach-infested, the state had to shut it down. Café Tu Tu Tango was open Thursday, but its day-long closure prompted Channel 9 to dig though stacks of state records on dirty restaurants.
THE LIST: List Of Restaurants Shut Down For Violations (PDF)
Channel 9 obtained a list from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation showing the conditions inspectors found during hundreds of semi-annual visits this year. The list shows more than 170 restaurants where state inspectors found critical violations, including roaches onsite.Restaurants that faced emergency closures included a broad range, from local pizza shops and delis, to the high-end Le Coq Au Vin restaurant and, in the heart of Orlando's tourist corridor, Café Tu Tu Tango.Café Tu Tu Tango is known by tourists and residents alike for its locally-produced art that covers the walls and its a la carte menu.State inspectors conducted a surprise visit of the International Drive venue November 27. They found a list of 32 food service violations, 13 of which were described as critical, where the likelihood of food contamination or illness was greatest. The state's violation report includes the discovery of 45 roaches, some dead in kitchen ceiling tiles, others living under food preparation areas, cheese and spinach dip stored at above 41 degrees and no evidence of a current restaurant license."I'm surprised. They should have higher standards," tourist Amy Cade told Eyewitness News in response to the report.A Café Tu Tu Tango manager told Eyewitness News off camera that the chain's corporate office forgot to renew the restaurant's license last April. When the inspector found out, she began looking more closely and found the other violations. The other violations were corrected and the license has been renewed. The majority of the restaurants on the list reopened a day or two after the violations were corrected.
