Orlando City Commissioner Daisy Lynum called a group of white reporters racist just after Siplin's remarks. Lynum made the comment moments after saying it was a time to heal. She has a history of attracting controversy, especially on the issue of race.In Monday's case, she was complaining that reporters at Siplin's press conference weren't paying enough attention to her and the other black leaders and they only seemed to listen when his white attorney spoke."Why should this cause anger and hostility? This is a time to rejoice for the whole community," Lynum said.In her remarks to congratulate State Senator Gary Siplin, Lynum talked about the need to put away racial divide in 2008 and start anew. But when the news conference was over, she made some controversial comments."You can just see their racist faces over there. Everybody was paying attention to her. She told the truth about everything. The rest of us are just peons," Lynum can be heard saying on camera shortly after the conference ended.Asked to clarify later, Lynum said she stands by her remarks and claims reporters at the news conference weren't paying attention when blacks spoke and that they only listened when a white attorney approached the podium. It wasn't the first racial controversy for the commissioner. In 2006, she referred to Orlando police officers as "white boys" and said she feared they'd shoot or taze her son during a traffic stop. The comment angered Orlando's police chief so much, he fired off a letter.Lynum refused to go on camera to talk about her latest statement Monday, but said she said it loud enough so that all the reporters would hear it.
