Patrolling Officer Discovers Body In Daytona Beach

Posted: 11:56 am EST January 3, 2008Updated: 5:44 pm EST January 3, 2008

A death investigation continued Thursday in Daytona Beach after an officer on patrol stumbled across a body. The officer found the body in a wooded area near Hancock Boulevard.

The officer found the body Wednesday night near the parking lot of an old, vacant church, close to the airport in Daytona Beach. Investigators were focusing on trees about 15 feet or so off the parking lot.

The officer said he could smell something and, when he walked into the brush, he discovered the body. Investigators said the body was of a white female.

The county helicopter, Air One, took a police photographer above the scene Thursday morning to look for any other evidence. They were also looking for any signs of homeless camps. It isn't a normal spot to find camps, but anywhere there are woods, it's possible.

Late Thursday morning, police started digging through a dumpster and trash can on the scene. They took out what appeared to be pieces of clothing and put it into evidence bags.

The investigation could be a slow, all-day event. The plan is to set up a grid and go over the area around the body inch-by-inch, looking for any signs of identification or evidence as to what led to the death.
