DOT Closes I-4 For Reconstruction After Crash, Detour Uses US-27

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Thursday morning, fog again covered stretches of I-4 in Polk County and cars were still being diverted around Wednesday morning's crash site.

In downtown Orlando on I-4 heading west, signs immediately warn drivers of the detour ahead. Five miles away from the crash, at mile marker 55, the Department of Transportation is re-routing traffic onto US-27 South to Haines City. Traffic is then directed to US-17/92 West.

Forty miles into the trip in Lake Alfred, just outside Haines City, the highway turns into two lanes, bringing traffic to a standstill. Even walkers on the side of the road were moving faster than the cars.

Fifty miles into the trip, the detour continues onto the Polk Parkway and about 30 minutes later, traffic works its way back onto I-4.

"As more people are aware of what is going on and how it is closed off, they are going to have to take these detours," said one driver.

It took an hour to drive the detour bringing the total drive time from Orlando to Tampa to two-and-a-half hours. Authorities said one plaza on the Polk Parkway will suspend tolls.
