Fire Crews Working To Suppress Smoke Near I-4 Crash Scene

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Crews worked through the night, to control the fire that's believed to have played a major role in the crash.

The fire started as a 50-acre controlled burn by Florida Fish and Wildlife. But when humidity levels dropped Tuesday afternoon, the fire suddenly burned out of control.

The fire has grown to at least 400 acres. Even though it is 90-percent contained, there is nothing forestry officials can do to control the smoke.

"There's a lot of unburned fuel on the interior of the fire we won't be able to reach with hoses," said Timber Weller of the Florida Division of Forestry. "Smoke is going to continue to be our number one concern until this is over."

Thursday morning, crews will attack the areas of the fire that are creating the most smoke. Forestry officials said the brush fire could continue to smolder for weeks.
