Longwood Residents Concerned Over 3 Bears Hanging Out In Tree

Monday, January 14, 2008

Monday, Florida Fish and Wildlife officials had planned to help residents along Cove Lake Drive in Longwood with some unwanted guests, but their help wasn't needed. The bears had been hiding out in trees in the neighborhood for days and neighbors said they had an extra concern about what's happening, but the bears had left by Monday.

Longwood resident Doug Kettles said three bears, including a cub, showed up in his backyard Thursday. Neighbors said they're used to bears roaming around their Sweetwater Cove subdivision because of its proximity to Wekiwa Springs State Park.

"When they first showed up we said they'll go away, but they haven't and now they've multiplied. There were two to start with and now there are three," said a concerned Kettles.

Other neighbors said the bears are climbing fences, trashing yards and becoming more aggressive.

"Now I believe it's a nuisance and now it's a hazard," said Dee Dee Abrams, a resident.

A Seminole County deputy was patrolling the neighborhood Monday morning. If the bears were still in the area Monday, Fish and Wildlife said they would send someone in to get the bears out. By noon, though, the bears had not been spotted.
