Bears Again Spotted Tearing Up Garbage In Longwood Neighborhood

Monday, January 21, 2008 – updated: 1:14 pm EST January 21, 2008

Bears were back in one Longwood neighborhood over the weekend and Monday there was evidence they were there. A resident told Eyewitness News she saw three bears in the Sweetwater Cove subdivision over the weekend. It's the second sighting in a week and now there's a new safety concern.

One of the first things David Gardiner did Monday morning was clean up a mess. At least one bear got a hold of his garbage can late Sunday night.

"We actually cooked a leg of lamb that night. I gave the bone to our dogs. A couple hours later we heard a ruckus. We thought the dogs were fighting for the bone. There was a bear, a family of them," Gardiner said.

There have been several bear sightings in the Sweetwater Cove subdivision off Wekiva Springs Road the past few days, partly because of its close proximity to Wekiva Springs State Park.

Gardiner's next door neighbor knows. She found bear droppings on her driveway. She and her husband have lived there for 15 years and have been through it many times before.

"When you look out your window and see a fairly large bear running around and pulling stuff apart, it isn't something you want to go out and deal with it," said homeowner Ken Moseley.

Neighbors said they haven't heard of people missing any pets due to the unwelcomed visitors, but it's a concern nonetheless.

"I would attribute that to alligators, if it's a small pet. There's one alligator right here. It's about a six, seven footer," said homeowner Adolfo Pereira.

Pereira said he's more worried about the gator that's been known to sunbathe on the same spot just about every afternoon.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said they have received no calls about either the bears or the alligator and said they can't do anything unless they receive a complaint.
