Moving Companies Flaunting State Laws
Danny and Wendy Cameron thought they would never see their belongings again. After the moving van arrived at their new house, the Camerons say the crew refused to unlock the truck."He said we're not unloading it until you go get us cash," said the Camerons. The Camerons found the company, Fast And Affordable Movers, in a Yellow Page ad. But they say a company called The Movers arrived instead. And according to Danny, a $700 estimate turned into a $1,100 bill.Action 9's Todd Ulrich asked: "Do you feel they were holding your stuff hostage?" "Of course they were," said the Camerons. "They got all your stuff in a locked truck."Danny Cameron says he paid against his will, then called Action 9.A supervisor would not talk to Action 9 about whether his company seemed to break the rules imposed by Florida's moving reform bill 5 years ago. Movers can't exceed an estimate by more than 15 percent and they can't demand payment in cash only.Ulrich asked, "Is it true you locked the truck and wouldn't unload until they paid cash?" but didn't get an answer.Moving companies must have a state registration that's listed on their ads. Action 9 couldn't find that in the company's ad or on the final bill, a contract that disappeared when we showed up.Ulrich asked the Camerons, "You think they grabbed that bill?" They answered, "They just have." Ulrich: "That's the only receipt you had?" Cameons: "That's the only one."Action 9 found moving complaints filed with the state are soaring. There are almost twice as many so far this year as last. Florida Consumer Services is investigating those Yellow Page ads. Nearly one out of every three movers did not list a Florida registration number that is required. The ad the Camerons called rings to an Orlando area apartment where four companies are booking moves. And two of those don't have a state license.Ulrich: "Unless you paid their amount, would they drive off with your stuff?" Camerons: "Yeah, they were told not to unload my stuff."No one from The Movers returned calls. The Florida Division of Consumer Services is investigating the complaint from the Camerons and has contacted Bell South Yellow pages about the moving company ads.
