APOPKA, Fla. -- It looks like any other plane, but the difference is what makes it fly. An Orange County pilot is on track to become the first to fly a jet fueled with biodiesel around the world.Doug Rodante is gearing up for an historic flight. His team, Green-Flight International based at the Apopka Airport, hopes to be the first to fly a Learjet fueled by bio-diesel around the world."It's puzzling why no one has done this before. I don't know why," Rodante told Eyewitness News on Wednesday.Rodante says his plane is powered by what's basically grease that costs nearly three dollars a gallon, instead of the more than six dollars he pays for a gallon of jet fuel. He says it will reduce emissions by more than 50-percent."Global warming is one of the biggest problems we have right now," he said.Rodante's team has done tests with the 1968 Czechoslovakian-built jet. It had a successful bio-diesel test flight outside Reno last October. Before attempting the first trans-continental flight and the first worldwide flight, Rodante's plane has to pass an FAA fuel test to make sure it's safe. He said they are almost complete. Then, the real estate investor hopes to make aviation history. He said he's not doing it for the money, just to prove it can work.Rodante has to test his planes near Reno because of the population density of Central Florida. He hopes to complete a cross-country flight this May and the worldwide flight next year.
