State Subcontractor Advertising FCAT Grader Jobs On Craigslist

Thursday, February 21, 2008 – updated: 4:32 pm EST February 21, 2008

The state makes a big deal every year about students succeeding on the FCAT, but a Channel 9 investigation revealed serious questions about who's grading those treasured tests.

Eyewitness News found a state subcontractor advertising FCAT grader jobs on the web site Craigslist and the Lake Mary temp agency said a background in education wasn't necessary, just a bachelor's degree.

Parents are concerned about what they call a lack of oversight. The FCAT is one of the most important tests a student takes. It can determine whether third graders move on to fourth grade and whether seniors graduate.

Eyewitness News has learned a temp agency subcontracted by the state is using CraigsList to find people to grade the essay portion of the FCATs for $10 an hour and parents aren't happy about it.

"It doest seem right. There are plenty of people out there that can do this. I don't know why we are opening the doors to anyone," parent Gail Bartell told Eyewitness News.

The Craigslist ad says you must have a bachelor's degree. The temp agency in Lake Mary said Thursday that any bachelor's degree will do. That's a violation of the state contract that requires graders to have a degree or coursework related to the subjects they're grading.

"It's too important. They've made it too important. I don't understand why they are taking such a lackluster approach to finding evaluators," Bartell said.

Retired teachers are puzzled, too. Roger Beathard taught in Seminole County for 31 years.

"They seem to be lowering the standards for people to grade them," he said.

The State Board of Education told Eyewitness News all of the graders go through four days of training. Parents told Eyewitness News they don't think that's enough.

The State Board of Education said they will look into the Lake Mary temp agency to make sure they are getting qualified graders. They also said they require transcripts to verify the graders' degrees.

Some students can be held back a grade if they fail the FCAT, but for the most part the test is a measure of a school's success. Schools that score "A" grades get an extra $100 in funding per student from the state.
