Scammers Hitting Disney Resorts, Telling Guests They Have Won Prizes

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Scam artists are preying on tourist who let down their guard at the happiest place on earth. Victims said someone has been calling Disney World resort guests in their rooms and telling them that they could get big prizes or discounts to Disney shows or restaurants.

The calls are really a ploy to get their credit card information. One victim said she got the call just moments after she checked into Disney's Polynesian Resort last October.

"I thought, 'gee, we hit the mother lode,'" said Linda Clark, a scam victim.

After calling her credit card company, Clark found out the scam artist used her credit card to purchase $1,500 worth of Disney passes. Channel 9 found out at least nine other victims have filed reports claiming they were ripped off as well.

Disney said it has placed information in resort rooms to remind guests to protect their credit card information and that cast members will never contact them by phone to request credit card information.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Disney is working with guests, even providing make-up tickets, to compensate them for their lost time and money.
