Teacher Accused Of Sending Sexually Explicit Text Messages To Student

Monday, March 3, 2008 – updated: 7:24 am EST March 4, 2008

A seventh grade science teacher at Corner Lakes Middle School will make his first appearance in court Tuesday morning after he was arrested for allegedly sending disturbing text messages to a student.

James Stafford, 25, was booked into the Orange County jail on several charges, including lewd and lascivious conduct. The sheriff's office said detectives from their sex crimes division arrested Stafford on Monday.

"That's frightening. What would make a teacher do something like that," asked a concerned parent.

According to detectives, Stafford discovered a 13-year-old student's number and sent her a number of explicit texts over the course of 24 hours, starting on February 26 of this year. The student said she did not know who was sending the text messages until she replied to one of the messages during class and heard his cell phone ring.

The student reported the exchange to school administration. Detectives then pulled Stafford's phone records and found three pages of messages sent to the teen.

"The conversation was extremely sexually explicit, saying, 'I want to have sex' with her and, 'Have you ever done it with a teacher before?' 'Have you ever done it with an older person before?' She didn't know who it was originally. She called the number and when the person's voice mail came up, she realized it was her teacher that was doing this text messaging to her," explained Sgt. Rich Mankewich, Orange County Sheriff's Office. "He originally denied that he sent them, saying that someone stole his SIM card, but after talking to him further he did admit that he did do this and that he knew it was a student he was doing it to."

Stafford, who lives in Orlando, was charged with lewd or lascivious conduct on a person under 17 and held on no bond. He's married to another teacher at Corner Lakes Middle and they are expecting a child together. The seventh grade science teacher, the school said, has been suspended with pay.

Stafford was being held with no bond.
