Man Fights, Wins License Back After SunPass Mix-Up

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 – updated: 2:23 pm EST March 4, 2008

A man who lost his driver's license because of a SunPass mix-up was back in court in Osceola County on Tuesday morning and won a fight to get his license back.

The man already spent $1,500 for an attorney to fight the charges. He walked out of the Osceola County courthouse late Tuesday morning. Before he did, he was forced to spend more than $600 to get his license back.

The Osceola County judge signed off on the deal his attorney reached with the Department of Transportation, which operates SunPass. DOT agreed to drop half the citations he received because of the mix-up. He lost his license over six citations he didn't know he had because SunPass sent the citations to his old address.

SunPass sends notices to the address listed on your car registration, because it doesn't have access to the address listed on your driver's license. The man who's been fighting the citations doesn't want to be identified, because he's afraid he'll get fired if his boss finds out he didn't have a license.

It wasn't the outcome he hoped for, but he's hoping SunPass will make changes to the system so it doesn't happen to anyone.

"They must change the way they do their system. They need to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else in the state of Florida," he said.

SunPass is working on getting access to the driver's license system so they can start cross-referencing the address on you car registration with your license.
