State Senator Says He Will No Longer Block Red Light Camera Bill

Thursday, March 13, 2008

A state senator from Lake County told Channel 9 he will no longer block a proposal to use cameras to ticket red light runners. But there's still a catch.

State senator Carey Baker said he'll only support the bill if the maximum fine is $60 instead of $125. Baker says he doesn't want local governments making money off the tickets.

"It is not to make money. It is to change the behavior. I don't think we're gonna change the behavior," said Orange County commissioner Linda Stewart.

Senator Baker's bill requires that only $30 from each fine goes to local governments. But at that rate, local leaders say it would take about 10,000 tickets to cover the cost of cameras at a single intersection.
