Concern In Brevard County As Wildfire Season Gets Underway

POSTED: 5:36 pm EDT March 17, 2008
UPDATED: 5:40 pm EDT March 17, 2008

The flames, the bulldozers and the smoke is just the beginning of what's expected to become a bad wildfire season. It's been raining more in recent months, but parts of the state are still facing rain deficits as the wildfire season starts.

Three wildfires started this weekend in Brevard County and the Division of Forestry is concerned for a few reasons this season.

The moisture levels in north Brevard County are good, relatively speaking, yet there was still a huge fire that spread rather quickly. Then there are other parts of the region and the state that are already much drier.

State forestry crews returned Monday to the burned out area next to State Road 407 to reinforce their breaks around the smoldering pines and palmettos. Firefighters said it appears the blaze began around an area frequented by ATV riders.

The fire erupted Sunday afternoon while the Warbird Air Show was going on at the Space Coast Regional Airport nearby. Steady winds, with gusts up to 25 miles an hour, picked up the embers and swept the fire across a 55-acre site in just a few hours.

It marked the beginning of the fire season in Brevard County. Firefighters say the length and the intensity of the fire season will depend on just how much or how little rain we get. In north Brevard County, there is still some moisture in the ground and plant life, but in south Brevard County it's not only drier, forestry workers say there is still a lot of fallen and dead trees from the hurricanes of 2004 that will provide fuel for fires until it rots or burns.

One other concern the Division of Forestry has is budget cuts. So far, Forestry has been able to hold on to their firefighting positions. Some incident command jobs have been left unfilled, but a spokesperson for the Forestry Division said, if the state asks for more cuts, they don't have much more wiggle room.
