Police: Victim Was Running Drug Operation From Waterford Trails Home

POSTED: 6:45 am EDT March 20, 2008
UPDATED: 4:45 pm EDT March 20, 2008

A shooting in an Orange County subdivision was causing a lot of concern Thursday afternoon. Investigators said the victim was actually running a drug operation in the quiet upper middle class neighborhood.

The crime scene tape was still up Thursday and it looked really out of place in the Waterford Trails subdivision with its $300,000 homes. Deputies said the shooting victim was running a secret drug operation inside, and Thursday morning, it finally caught up with him.

Big blocks of marijuana and kilos of cocaine were found in 28-year-old Jahroy Sackey's home early Thursday morning. Deputies pulled out box after box of drugs and guns and hauled it off in a truck. The guy who mows Sackey's lawn was not surprised.

"You could smell the marijuana inside his house, anytime door cracked open, it was a pretty strong smell," said gardener Jeff Westcott.

Sackey's girlfriend called deputies to the upper middle class neighborhood just before 3:00am. Deputies found Sackey bleeding from his neck after, his girlfriend said, two robbers ambushed and shot him when they came home.

"They backed into garage, two black males came into garage with bandanas, started demanding money," said Reginald Josey, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators quickly discovered why Sackey was targeted. Almost $50,000 in cash was in the house, along with enough drugs for a major trafficking operation. Sackey's next door neighbor couldn't believe it.

"Frightening, real frightening. I have kids and God forbid one of them was out here," said neighbor Olga Turpeau, who said Sackey kept a good cover and, by all accounts, was a nice guy. "Beautiful people. They were always saying hi to me. How am I doing? Never expected anything, never."

The suspect victim is expected to survive. He will be arrested on charges related to the drugs found. The robbers got away and, even if deputies find them, the victim said he does not want to prosecute.
