Drug-Induced Hallucinations Blamed After SWAT Called To Condo

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- A report of a shooting Monday morning led to an evacuation and a standoff in Winter Garden, but then the story took a bizarre turn and, while a shot was fired, police think the shooter may have been aiming at his own shadow.

An army of officers and the SWAT specialists all rushed to the scene at the Village Grove Condos near West Colonial Drive and Park Avenue when a couple who lives there reported shots fired inside their condo and that someone was still inside with a gun. But when officers went in, they found nothing.When police arrived, they found a woman crawling out of the bedroom window of the condo. She told them that her boyfriend was still inside and that at least two people were shooting at them.Police relied on that information for the first two hours. They sealed the neighborhood, called the Orange County SWAT deputies and crisis negotiators. They even used a search helicopter to look for possible suspects.Police found the woman's boyfriend in the wooded area near the fence line. He was not hurt."According to interviews with both of them, it appears there was some drug usage in the house. An excessive amount of drugs would lead to maybe some hallucinations," explained Lt. Jon Johnson, Winter Garden Police Department.Police found a gun registered to the boyfriend inside the condo with evidence that it had been fired. They'll compare all of the shell casings to see how many guns were used.It appears, though, the boyfriend may have been firing at his own shadow. The woman suffered several cuts from climbing out the window, but should be okay.
