WASHINGTON -- Wednesday, the Consumer Federation of America released a report that could leave drivers feeling more pinched at the pump. It says prices could jump $0.75 a gallon by Memorial Day, thanks in part to higher crude oil prices and reduced output from refineries. The Consumer Federation argues that corporate gas greed is preventing us from getting the relief that should be coming our way. According to the report, demand for gas is down and our gas inventory is up. In addition, cheaper ethanol is being pumped into most gas tanks. However, the reports states, because there’s less competition among the consolidated oil companies, there’s less incentives to bring prices down. It’s not all gloom and doom, though. The Consumer Federation sees promise of price reduction in “king corn.” Ethanol has already driven down gas prices, and the report indicates that more alternative fuel sources will drive them down further.Congress has also acted, recently passing a bill requiring stricter fuel economy standards by 2020. Lawmakers are far from through investigating the matter. Next week, they’ll be holding a hearing to grill oil company CEOs about their record profits.
