ORLANDO, Fla. -- A man trying to smuggle bomb-making materials onto a plane at Orlando International Airport may have been trying to get the explosives into Jamaica to commit an act of revenge.Kevin Brown, 32, is an Iraq war veteran who lived in Central Florida, but was born in Jamaica. Brown may have wanted revenge for his mother's murder in Jamaica. Brown's mom was murdered inside a Jamaican hotel two years ago and Jamaican media sources say an attempt to bring explosives on the plane may have been part of a revenge plot.

Brown's attempt to smuggle bomb-making materials on the Air Jamaica flight came to an abrupt end Tuesday when police at Orlando International Airport grabbed him outside Terminal A. Wednesday, though, the story surrounding his bizarre behavior grew more intriguing,Channel 9 has learned, two years ago, Brown's mother, Sandra McLeod, was strangled to death inside Merril's 3 Resort in Negril, Jamaica. She was a co-owner of the hotel. Two men who helped operate the business were arrested.Jamaican media sources say the events that unfolded at OIA may have been directly linked to his mother's murder. Brown is under arrest for trying to bring pipes, BBs and explosives back to his home country, possibly as part of a revenge plot to use the explosives to carry out an attack on the men he believes are responsible for killing his mom.
Suspect Makes First Court AppearanceBrown was supposed to have a bond hearing in federal court Wednesday, but it was delayed while the court tries to figure out whether he is mentally ill.A federal affidavit shows Brown had two vodka bottles holding a flammable liquid called nitro-methane. It's used as a solvent, a dry cleaning solution, and also as racing fuel. You can't just buy it; it's heavily regulated by the government. The question is how did Brown get it?When investigators searched Brown's bags at Orlando International Airport, they found instructions to make a pipe bomb and they found everything he would have needed to make one. An Orange County sheriff's bomb expert wrote in his report that the model rocket igniter found in one of the bags Brown tried to check onto Air Jamaica flight 80 could have been used as a wick with the bottles of nitro-methane he had and he could have ignited it with the lighter he had.Even though the parts were all separate and would have been out of his reach in the plane's cargo hold, he had access to them inside the airport terminal.Nitro-methane was one of the explosives used in the Oklahoma City bombing of the Federal Building in April 1995.
Planned To Make Pipe Bomb, Mental Health QuestionedBrown told investigators a number of stories about why he had all the makings of a pipe bomb. One was that he was going to set it off on a tree stump in Jamaica. Another was that he was going to show his friends there how to make one.Partly for that reason, federal prosecutors said Wednesday they needed another day to investigate his mental health before they decide whether to fight against his release on bond.
Suspect Served With U.S. ArmyRecords show Brown was at the medical unit at Fort Bennington in Columbus, Georgia after he served in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War more than ten years ago. He was married briefly to another soldier.A relative told a Jamaican newspaper reporter that after serving in the war, Brown has had mental health issues for which he takes medication, but sometimes mixes it with alcohol or other drugs that affect his behavior.A records search found several Orlando addresses associated with Brown, possibly where he received mail or bills, but found no sign that he had actually been at any of the locations.Brown's sister-in-law told a Jamaican newspaper she didn't believe it really was a pipe bomb investigators found. Instead, she claimed, it was probably a pipe for smoking marijuana, which she said Brown liked to do.
