Jacksonville Doctor Arrested In Osceola County Sex Sting

Saturday, April 5, 2008 – updated: 9:58 pm EDT April 6, 2008

Osceola County deputies arrested a Jacksonville doctor Saturday after they say he drove to St. Cloud to have sex with a teenage girl, or at least that's what he thought.

Deputies set up a sting after they received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that the man might be preying on underage girls in their county. Deputies said the group found out that the man was talking to another underage girl in a chat room and sent a picture of himself standing in front of an Osceola County hotel.

Thinking that he was from Osceola County, deputies started an online conversation with him pretending to be a teenage girl. After two conversations, an arrangement was made to meet at a 7-Eleven Saturday afternoon.

Irfan Nawaz, 31, drove more than 150 miles only to be handcuffed and slapped with sex charges. Osceola County Sheriff's Spokeswoman Twis Lizasuain said Nawaz drove from Jacksonville to St. Cloud, where he thought he was going to meet a 15-year-old girl he had been chatting with online.

Deputies said he sent pictures and, during a four-hour long conversation, Nawaz asked the girl to perform a lewd act. Investigators said it was a high-profile arrest because of Nawaz's profession. Investigators learned he's a doctor and has an internal medicine practice in Jacksonville.

Research revealed Nawaz not only practices internal medicine, but he's a published author in medicine journals.

Nawaz has been charged with traveling to meet a minor for sex and soliciting a minor for a lewd act.
