DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Bethune-Cookman University football player is in trouble with the law. Brandon Wright, a backup quarterback for the Wildcats, was arrested in his dorm on charges of attempted murder and dealing drugs.Police said he was living on campus, but he was making a living by selling drugs and an unpaid bill of just $200 nearly led to a murder. On the field, he was a backup quarterback and a running back for Bethune-Cookman University and, before that, the Naval Academy. But off the field, police said, Brandon Wright was a drug dealer.Last Friday, police were called to a Daytona Beach home, which neighbors told Eyewitness News was home to frequent parties. The 21-year-old man inside said he owed Brandon Wright money, so Wright hit him with a shotgun and then taped up his hands and feet. Somehow the victim escaped the tape, but when he ran into the neighborhood, Wright tried to run him over with his truck.A neighbor, who helped the victim, saw the license plate number on Wright's truck, which eventually led police to the university where they arrested him as he was preparing to leave campus Monday.Bethune-Cookman University issued a statement about the incident, saying the school "has a zero tolerance policy for illegal behavior. Violation of these codes of conduct will result in suspension, dismissal or referral to law enforcement authorities as appropriate."
