Crews Stop Brush Fire Threatening Palm Bay Homes

PALM BAY, Fla. -- Crews have contained a fast-moving brush fire that pushed through Palm Bay on Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters scrambled to control the fire, but high winds that gusted up to 30 miles-an-hour had them worried the blaze might spread. They cut fire lines in a five acre area and contained it around 3:15pm. Brevard County fire officials said crews were mopping up hot spots at that time.The fire started in Brevard County, outside of Palm Bay, near Babcock Street and Puddle Duck Lane about 1:30. Police officers blocked traffic in the areas of Babcock Street and Wichita in Palm Bay.Residents initially were asked to prepare to evacuate their homes in the event the fire should spread. The fire was bad enough that a helicopter was called in to drop water on the flames. The fire crept close to one home."I ran across and got the guy out of his house," said Erin Larrabee. "Flames were shooting up over the top of the house."That home was not damaged and there were no reports of injuries. Firefighters were not sure what caused the blaze.Crews from Palm Bay Fire Rescue, Brevard County Fire Rescue, Malabar Volunteer Fire Dept., Micco Volunteer Fire Department and the Florida Division of Forestry fought the blaze.
