Dangerous Day On Volusia County Beaches Keeps Lifeguards Busy

Posted: 10:30 pm EDT April 26, 2008Updated: 11:31 am EDT April 28, 2008

Volusia County rescuers spent hours Saturday evening searching for a swimmer who went under the water and never resurfaced.

While Beach Patrol is reluctant to give up hope, they admit the chances of finding the man alive are not very good.

A lifeguard saw the man go under the water, but couldn’t reach him in time. A friend who made it to shore identified the victim as a 19-year-old visiting from Ecuador.

Lifeguards and Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputies Searched with jet skis and a helicopter late into the evening, but with little to no visibility they were forced to back out of the water and patrol the beach.

Rip currents kept lifeguards busy all day. Two men swimming in Daytona Beach nearly drowned, they were just two of the 92 swimmers that were rescued.

A surfer in New Smyrna Beach also found himself in some trouble when he was bitten by a shark Sunday morning. He suffered several puncture wounds, but was able to drive himself to the hospital.
