Adoption Agency Says State Budget Cuts Have Left Them With No Money

Posted: 7:37 am EDT April 30, 2008Updated: 8:40 am EDT April 30, 2008

The agency that organizes adoptions for Seminole County foster children is out of money.

The leader of Community Based Care of Seminole County said state budget cuts are so crippling that the agency doesn't have enough money for even one adoption. The state has slashed the budget for foster care funding by $1 million.

The state typically picks up the costs for adopting children with special needs.

"Which means all the adoption money is used. No more money next year. We can't complete any adoptions," said a Community Based Care employee.

There are 11,000 children in Florida who need a home. Nearly 400 children are adopted out of the Central Florida area each year.
